Redline Fox and I have finally finished putting together the Special Edition version of Kids 'N' Vigs, and it is now available.
The story itself is now in an easy-to-read widescreen document file (.doc), so you get to see it exactly as we wrote it.
Also included are a whole bunch of extra features, including:
-
Story Credits listing everyone involved in the project, along with a list of characters.
-A comprehensive
Director's Commentary that is filled with tons of information and background on almost every aspect of the story - it even lists most of the Movie, Television, and Literary references that we made.
-A
Vehicles and Weapons Guide with information on all the major vehicles that appeared in the story, and all the new weapons and technology that we created.
-Not one, but TWO alternate endings.
-Several other goodies that you'll have to see for yourselves...
Where can you get it?
Right Here: Kids 'N' Vigs - SE
A big thanks to Lightfoot for hosting the file and for putting up with us while we were still writing and posting the story, chapter by chapter.

It cost me two seconds of my *very* valuable time to download.
It better be worth it!

I haven't had a chance to re-read the story itself, but the commentary in particular is a great read.

It's a masterpiece.
I reckon it'd make a hell of a good movie.

just finished the reading.
havent read the alternate ending yet
was just thinking the same thing about the movie thing.
but maybe a slightly larger plan
all of the stories that tie together somehow. it would be like a series.
lots of movies.
alll would have to be put in order though.
i think the next thing i'm going to read will be New England Run
i have started before but never had time to read it.
last time i printed it out was when it was on the old interstate fiction site.
still waiting for the B.U.T.S story to be completed...not sure if it ever will.

finished New England Run and High Stakes today
kind of thought NER came to an abrupt end. did redline get tired of writing? or just plan that as the ending.
and the alternate endings in Kids and Vigs are pretty funny well...not "like a clown funny" but just silly little abrupt endings.

i printed out essentially all of the stories here and compiled basically
a book of all the short stories
and NER
High Stakes
Kids and Vigs
so my wife could read them.
any how i was nearing the end of the pages i had printed out for NER and was really wondering how it was going to end.
because of what i had already read i kind of knew how long it took you to write a certain thing and it just didnt seem like there were enough pages to end the story.
it was a suitable ending. left some questions though.
great stories
i love how when you read one you can tie it in with some of the others you have read.
i think i may try my hand at some fiction although it would be difficult.
not only because of my writing skills but because of what has already happened. i dont really want to contradict any stories but some of the vigs involved in them i would like to use also. however if there is an event large enough to make a good story yet was omitted from the timeline it just wouldnt make sense.
and some of them are dead!
*voice of stan from southpark*
oh my god...you killed Sean!, and Pro, and...i guess the body count isnt that bad hehe.
i know i'm rambling a bit but i will wrap it up...
question. how did agent cole play into everything. he wasnt an actual person that played the game was he?
and how about Snake, who died in KNV.

Just FYI, I did not write the stories in order of when they occured on the time line. NER was actually the first story I wrote.

When RLF and I were writing those, we attempted to maintain as much continuity as possible with the stories we had already written, but didn't pay a lot of attention to anything written by anyone else because there was too much out there -- if you took all Interstate fiction as a whole there would be tons of inconsistencies and contradictions.
It's much easier to treat every set of stores as a seperate, alternate universe -- tying them in with other stories in their particular "universe" is always neat because it rewards the people that read everything you have written, but to tie it in with someone else's work can be too daunting of a task.
So, don't let anything that has already been written affect what you want to do - use any characters you want, even if they may have been "killed" in someone else's story.

While it's possible that at some point in the history of the game there was someone named "Cole", the one that appears in NER and KNV was an entirely fictional character created by RLF. It's neat to see a lot of familiar names in stories, but sometimes you need to fill a particular type of role and have no one that fits quite right.
It's also a somewhat touchy subject turning someone well-known (and/or well-liked) into a "bad guy" that the readers are supposed to dislike or despise, unless the person behind the name actually wants to be written in as a bad guy. If you look closely at much of the first half of the joint story "High Stakes", almost every time someone new wrote a section they added themselves or some close friends as more good guys - it got to the point that there were so many of them and so few antagonists that something had to be done. Some of them never survived more than a chapter or two past their introduction.
Aside from The Wraith, most of the villans in our stories have been entirely fictional - Akihiko Tan (Oni/Cobra), Horst and Guenter (leaders of the German Wolf Pack), Tic-Tac (he captured Owen in HS), Viper (Tan's son in FoF), etc.
Snake (AKA Hollywood) was a real person, and he even helped write a little of KNV in the beginning. When he disappeared for more than a year and showed no signs of ever coming back, RLF and I chose to go a slightly different direction with his character...
